After seven successive defeats at Turf Moor, Burnley secured a first home win of the Premier League season as the Vertu Motors-backed side moved off the bottom of the table.

The Clarets had lost every league game since a 2-1 win at Luton in early October and went into the game against Sheffield United desperate to avoid defeat against their fellow strugglers.

Things couldn’t have started much better for the home side as Jay Rodriguez scored the fastest goal seen in the Premier League this season, heading home a cross within 15 seconds of the start. Jacob Bruun Larsen then doubled the lead before half-time, with the visitors having Oli McBurnie sent off for two yellow cards.

In a game that boss Vincent Kompany had declared was ‘massive’ before kick-off, Burnley took complete control after the break as they drove home the advantage of having an extra man, with Zeki Amdouni breaking into the box to fire home number three and Luca Koleosho squeezing in the fourth just moments after missing a chance to extend the lead.

Josh Brownhill then smashed in a fifth with ten minutes to go to wrap up a vital win that moves Burnley off the bottom of the table and ahead of their rivals to sit two points from safety.

Two big away games now follow against Wolves and Brighton.
