Burnley Stay Alive With Old Trafford Draw
Burnley have inched closer to the teams ahead in the fight for Premier League survival after battling to a draw away at Manchester United – leaving the Vertu Motors-backed side sitting two points away from safety with three games left to play.
The Clarets headed for Old Trafford on the back of a crucial win against Sheffield United the previous week hoping to benefit from the fluctuating form of the home side – which had struggled for results in the previous two games.
Burnley had the first chance within the opening minute when David Datro Fofano forced Andre Onana into a save, before Alejandro Garnacho fired over from close range shortly afterwards as both sides spurned opportunities to hit the front.
Christian Eriksen then fired narrowly wide for the home side before a shot from Bruno Fernandes smashed against the post with Arijanet Muric well beaten.
Burnley then came close to snatching the lead following a free-kick on the left, with a shot from Josh Cullen from outside the box being headed on by Lyle Foster – forcing Onana into a fine save from close range to keep the scores level.
Moments later, Foster then spurned a one-on-one chance with the ‘keeper to leave the sides level at half-time.
The second half saw Antony force Muric into an early save before the Brazilian opened the scoring with eleven minutes left – picking up a loose pass and driving forwards before placing a shot beyond the ‘keeper and into the corner.
Burnley refused to give up however and with the clock ticking down, Onana was penalised for flattening Zeki Amdouni in the box when trying to punch a high ball clear.
Amdouni himself stepped up to take the penalty and sent the ‘keeper the wrong way to secure a point and move Burnley closer to both Nottingham Forest and Luton Town ahead after both were beaten.
Burnley now face Newcastle United this weekend in the penultimate home game of the season, with a game against Forest still to come.
