Ten Second Review

Volkswagen's BlueMotion eco models account for a bigger slice of its sales year on year, but this Jetta BlueMotion looks set to remain a niche player. That's a shame, as it's developing an identity of its own and with the potential to return an average of over 67mpg and emissions of just 109g/km it more than lives up to its green/Blue billing.

The Jetta is the big underachiever of the Volkswagen range. It's a car I've a lot of time for as it's unjustly ignored whereas its sibling, the Golf, enjoys massive success. The formula has been relatively unchanged from the original Jetta and its Vento and Bora incarnations, but this latest Jetta not only rides on a longer wheelbase than the Golf but it gets a different front end that gives it more of its own personality. The BlueMotion 1.6-litre diesel model we take a look at here looks set to be the most popular model in the Jetta line up promising, as it does, fantastic economy, low emissions and that trademark Volkswagen build quality. The sort of build quality you only find in cars from Germany? Well, maybe not as this Jetta is built in Mexico. With Volkswagen expecting to shift less than 3,000 Jettas this year compared to the 60,000 Golfs it shifted last year, exclusivity is certainly on your side.

Driving Experience

The Jetta 1.6 BlueMotion is a vehicle that knows its place. Yes, there's the inevitable 'Sport' trim level, but it really should come with a small sachet of salt in the glove box. Relying on a modest 105bhp, the Jetta is a classic case of small engine in relatively big car that just about gets away with it . From a standstill 60mph takes just over 12 seconds. That said, the diesel engine offers enough torque to make motorway driving pleasant enough and even long uphill stretches won't have you grimacing or knocking the gears down a ratio or two. The Jetta never feels quite as light on its feet as a Golf, perhaps due to its increased size, but everything it does, it does extremely smoothly. Whichever trim level you opt for, there's the opportunity to specify the DSG twin-clutch sequential gearbox. This makes city driving so much easier but starts to dent the BlueMotion's raison d'etre by knocking a couple of miles per gallon from the fuel economy figure. Refinement is excellent with very little wind or engine noise. Go for the Sport model and you'll have some tyre thrum on poor surfaces but that's only to be expected.

Design and Build

The one statistic that demonstrates quite how far the Jetta has diverged from the Golf is its overall length which is now within 12.5cm of a Passat's and over 44cm longer than a Golf's. Therefore it's probably more accurate to think of a Jetta as a slightly shrunken Passat than as a Golf with a boot. Compare the wheelbase of the Jetta and the Passat and there's only 2.8cm in it, which gives you a clue to how spacious the Jetta is inside. There are some surprisingly hard plastics used for the door trims, and the bootlid doesn't feature the delightful flipping VW badge we've become accustomed to. The sleek shape of the Jetta, unveiled again in New York's Times Square, has been styled under the leadership of Klaus Bischoff, VW's head of design. Not a single body panel is carried over from its predecessor, the Jetta's elegant appearance marking the latest evolution of a new phase in Volkswagen design. It's a significantly bigger car than before as well, the overall length swelling by 90mm to 4,644mm. In addition, the wheelbase has also been extended to 2,648mm, an increase of 70mm resulting in 67mm more legroom for back seat passengers. A 510-litre boot offers serious carrying capacity and a pragmatic layout. Styling is certainly subjective but has any recent Golf looked quite this good?

Market and Model

The Jetta BlueMotion is also offered in 2.0-litre guise and even this more powerful engine still returns 58.9mpg. It makes a lot of sense to stick with the 1.6-litre though. Not only is it adequately sprightly, but it also gets far better fuel economy, its emissions are way lower and it's around £500 cheaper model for model. Three trim levels are offered, S, SE and Sport and the middle one is choice, being well appointed but retaining the comfortable suspension setup. In order to incentivise sales, equipment levels are strong; certainly better than the German stereotype would suggest. An all-new dashboard with aluminium highlights sits ahead of a leather-trimmed three-spoke steering wheel. Every Jetta model also gets an integrated multifunction display, air conditioning and a CD stereo system. Available as an option is touchscreen satellite navigation. As you would expect from Volkswagen, a comprehensive array of safety features also makes the specification sheet including six airbags, anti lock brakes and an Electronic Stabilisation Programme.

Cost of Ownership

Features such as Stop/Start and battery regeneration help the BlueMotion 1.6 to its impressive 67.3mpg fuel economy figure. With prices starting at around £18,500, the Jetta looks strong value for money, especially when the entry Golf 1.6 TDI BlueMotion is priced a couple of hundred pounds higher and isn't nearly as roomy. You'll need to pay around £1,300 extra if you want the excellent twin-clutch DSG gearbox but as much as I love that technology, my advice in this instance would be to keep your money in your pocket and stick with the manual car. At 109g/km the manual car also does better in terms of emissions than a 113g/km DSG-equipped variant. One continuing theme that's unlikely to differ is the strong residual value of the Jetta. The laws of supply and demand have propped up used values very well although the problem of depressed residuals via oversupply is a problem that Volkswagen would probably like to have. Day to day running costs are modest as a consequence of low insurance ratings brought about by excellent safety and security and the BlueMotion 1.6's economy and emissions figures speak for themselves.
