Ten Second Review
Let's face it, most Vauxhall Corsa buyers don't choose the car to demonstrate their wanton financial excess, so the idea of a 1.3-litre diesel ecoFLEX economy model is a good 'un. With 94bhp under your right foot, it's not actually that slow and you'll love the 88g/km and 85.6mpg emissions and economy figures.
There's something extremely liberating about the promise of cheap travel. It inspires us to get out there and make the most of our free time. 'Travel yourself interesting' is the catchphrase to one recent travel website advert and there's some merit in that, especially when it comes to cars. The idea of owning one that can cover a few miles and not deliver a sound wallop in the wallet has much to commend it. It's certainly a more beguiling concept than overextending yourself on a fuel hog and contenting yourself with the fact that polish is cheaper than petrol. Vauxhall's Corsa has long been one of the nation's favourite superminis and while we'd be the first to admit that it's probably not the most interesting car in its class, buyers like its simple, no-nonsense proposition of inexpensive motoring, strong dealer back up and decent build quality. If you want your fuel budget to stretch even further, consider the Corsa 1.3 CDTi ecoFLEX. Whoever said travel was about the journey rather than the destination might just have had that wrong.
With 94bhp on tap, this Corsa 1.3 CDTi ecoFLEX is never going to be a tarmac scorcher but the combination of clever gearing and an engine that delivers some 190Nm of torque between 1,750 and 3,250rpm means that it can feel agreeably brisk once you've got the car moving. That last bit is key as at anything much below 2,000rpm, the ecoFLEX can feel sluggish. It's something you'll get to grips with pretty quickly but it does mean you'll probably need to dial in a few more revs than you'd normally do when pulling out of junctions or onto roundabouts. Engine refinement isn't at all bad even at motorway speeds, but on major roads you may want for a little more in the way of steering feel. The lightweight helm which feels so right at city speeds can feel a little disconcerting when hustling along at a reasonable clip, but it's hard to criticise Vauxhall too severely for concentrating on the car's home turf. Performance stats seem largely redundant for this sort of car but in case you're interested, it manages 62mph from rest in 12.3 seconds and runs on to a top whack of 110mph.
Design and Build
The third generation Corsa has real visual impact. Though it shares its platform, suspension and steering with Fiat's Punto, there's a very different look and feel, the front end featuring a deep Vauxhall V-grille with aggressive air intakes under the bumper and a pair of headlamps that smear back along the wings. Though both three and five-door body styles occupy pretty much the same footprint on the road, Vauxhall has tried to give them each their own separate appeal, though the three-door tested here does look a little sleeker with its rear wheel arch bulges and raked rear window. Inside there's a solid Germanic quality to its build combined with slick design that catches the eye. There are classy touches like the translucent ambient lighting on the window switches and centre console buttons - though it's a pity you only get this (and more important features like height adjustment for the seat and reach adjustment for the steering wheel) on plusher versions. In the back, there's plenty of room for two fully-grown adults, though in three-door form the ambience can be a little claustrophobic. There's a reasonable 285-litres of boot space with all the seats in place. If that isn't enough, then of course there's the usual option of the rear bench forward (it's split-folding unless you're in a really basic version), which in this case frees up 1100-litres of luggage space.
Market and Model
The Corsa 1.3 CDTi ecoFLEX range is fairly easy to get a handle on. We're looking at the 94bhp car here. There's also a 74bhp car but it's a good deal slower, only marginally more economical and costs only around £200 less. It takes over two and a half seconds longer to get to 62mph, so in real world scenarios you'd likely use more fuel just by being heavier with the throttle pedal. It's one that we'd recommend avoiding. The 94bhp ecoFLEX variant opens at just over £12,000 in three-door trim, with a premium of around £400 more if you want five doors. Go for a top trim level and you're still looking at a list price comfortably less than £17,000. In case you're thinking those prices don't tally up too favourably with what you might spend on a Fiesta or a Clio, remember that Vauxhall dealers are normally open to a spot of negotiation. Also bear in mind that equipment levels have become more generous in recent years. All Corsa models come with a CD stereo, remote central locking and electric mirrors. Of course on plusher trim levels or on the options list, there's a whole rosta of 'big car-style' equipment, including headlamps that follow you round corners and a clever Enhanced Understeer Control system. One really neat option is a Flex-Fit integrated bike rack that slides out of the rear bumper. Safety-wise, there's a minimum of two airbags - and six on most models - though you still have to pay nearly £500 extra on base models for ESP stability control. Black mark for that one, Vauxhall.
Cost of Ownership
The 1.3-litre turbodiesel engine makes all the right sorts of numbers. The emissions of 88g/km are fully 26 per cent lower than the first Corsa ecoFLEX, introduced in 2008. There are subtle differences between the three and five-door cars with the three-door versions achieving that headline 85.6mpg and 88g/km while the heavier five-door models are fractionally worse off at 83.1mpg and 89g/km. A number of enhancements have been made to reduce consumption and emissions. The turbodiesel is equipped with a variable displacement oil pump that delivers only the necessary oil pressure. It varies oil volume depending on the load in order to reduce the energy needed for oil circulation. The use of special low-viscosity transmission oil also contributes to efficient fuel consumption. These measures are rounded off by an adjustment of engine mapping in the engine control module.
