Ten Second Review

The Land Rover Freelander range has a new flagship in the buff shape of the Metropolis model. It only comes with the 190bhp SD4 diesel engine which is no bad thing and equipment includes 19-inch alloys, a panoramic glass roof, an 825-watt Meridian surround sound stereo, soft leather upholstery and carpets so deep you could lose toddlers in them.

Background

These are exciting times for Land Rover. Back in 1996, the year before the Freelander was first launched, the company sold 125,000 vehicles worldwide. In 2013, Land Rover shifted over 350,000 units, with the US, Germany and India being the biggest growth markets. The vehicle that has been responsible for the lion's share of this success isn't the doughty Defender, the luxurious Range Rover or the sleek Evoque. It's the rather more humble Freelander that does the heavy lifting in the sales charts. As we've seen though, there are some Freelanders that are anything but humble. Range-toppers feel like executive lounges inside and Land Rover looks to build on that very special feel with the Metropolis model, taking over from the HST at the top of the Freelander range and bringing some of the design ethos of the Evoque with it.

Driving Experience

There's only one engine available to Metropolis buyers but fortunately it's a gem. The SD4 engine has 190bhp on tap, and is both refined and quick off the mark, Land Rover's all-wheel drive system instantly detecting impending front wheel slip and entraining the rear tyres to share the load. It gets to 60mph in just 9.5 seconds although the Freelander's rather bluff front end calls a halt to proceedings at a modest 118mph. It handles crisply too, with well-weighted steering and reasonable body control. The six-speed automatic transmission is smooth and features well-judged ratios. The all-wheel-drive setup is fuel efficient in normal road driving conditions but ask more of it and you get the opportunity to play with Land Rover's excellent Terrain Response system. This clever piece of technology features different modes for the different terrains the Freelander might encounter and goes a long way towards excusing the car's lack of a proper low-range transfer case. This system acts almost like an off-road expert sat alongside you, selecting the best traction mode for any given terrain type. It sniffs out grip where none seems to exist while all of the Freelander's inherent all-terrain rightness (underbody protection, ground clearance, tight approach, breakover and departure angles) endows it with genuinely impressive off-road chops. I'm guessing that few owners are going to risk the Metropolis's diamond-turned 19-inch alloys in a flinty rut though.

Design and Build

With many vehicles, the shape gets fussier and less elegant as they age. The Freelander reverses that theme. The Freelander 2 retains the original's signature windscreen rake and the heavily angled side windows and in Metropolis guise, adds a bit of jewellery with a panoramic glass sunroof and those lovely 19-inch wheels. Look a bit closer and you'll also spot xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights and a dinky reversing camera. The interior is as good as you expect. It's amazing what a difference some quite simple upgrades can have to interior ambience and the Metropolis's deep pile carpeting is a case in point. It's like you've suddenly been transported back to the shag pile era of the Seventies. You want to drive this car barefoot. You also get electrically adjustable (eight-way for driver, six-way for passenger) front seats upholstered in Windsor leather, touchscreen-controlled satellite navigation and an 825W Meridian surround sound system. The heated steering wheel is one of those things that once sampled, you'll find hard to give up, especially if you're a winter sports enthusiast. Metallic paint is standard on the outside and gloss black interior parts also underscore the upmarket look and feel.

Market and Model

The Metropolis might get its fair share of luxuries, but buyers don't get the luxury of a whole lot of choice. It's one trim level with one transmission and one engine offered at the singular price of around £36,000. At least that proposition is straightforward. How does it compare to its key rivals? Surprisingly well, given this is an unashamedly high-end confection. The BMW X3 2.0d xLine has exactly the same power output from its diesel engine, is £10 pricier than the Metropolis yet BMW will want nearly £1,200 extra for an electric sunroof and another £645 for metallic paint. How about the Audi Q5. Can we find better value there? Not even close. A Q5 S line Plus 2.0 TDI is 13bhp down on power, costs over £3,000 more and again you get stung for over a grand for an electric sunroof, which doesn't offer anything like the airy cabin feel of the Freelander's full glass top. Likewise, none of its German rivals offer a stereo that can get anywhere close to the Metropolis's thumping 825-watt Meridian surround sound system. This features 15 amplifier channels driving 17 speakers including a dual channel subwoofer, centre and surround speakers. You get DAB radio, a CD/MP3 disc player and inputs for iPod, USB and other external media devices. It's certainly a big step on from the old 14-speaker Dolby Pro Logic stereo.

Cost of Ownership

The Freelander Metropolis is one of those cars that seems to offer performance and economy figures entirely at odds with one another. Yes, it is impressively accelerative, but with a more measured right boot you'll be able to average 40.4mpg. That's not bad, but it's still some way off class-leading. It compares to 47.1mpg for the less powerful Audi Q5 2.0 TDI 177 and 54.3mpg for the punchy BMW X3 2.0-litre TDI. It's a similar story when it comes to emissions, the Freelander SD4's 185g/km being aced by the X3's 149g/km. In other words good, but not threatening the class best. Resale values for the Freelander 2 have outstripped initial industry estimates, with retained values after three years of comfortably over 40 per cent of its original price. The SD4 model is a popular used target and although it's often the case that the biggest depreciation hit is taken by the flagship model, the Metropolis's market positioning against its key rivals might well hold it in good stead.
