Ten Second Review
Chances are that Mitsubishi's Colt isn't at the top of your supermini shortlist, but clever buyer will realise that modest demand spells the opportunity for serious discounts. The latest Juro special edition features leather, 16-inch alloys and a Garmin portable sat nav. With list prices looking keen, a deal might punt the baby Colt right into contention. Watch for pricey insurance though.
I was performing a bit of essential pruning to my social network friends list this week and came across a guy that sparked absolutely no recognition at all. Who on earth was Ian Atkins? He was friends with none of my friends, merely a random person who had materialised in the middle of more familiar faces. I had a similar moment of mild puzzlement when Mitsubishi launched the Colt Juro. The Colt? Was it still alive? In my head, I think I'd already killed it off and invented a successor. In fact the Colt is very much alive, albeit a little underexposed. The Juro is a value-packed special edition that aims to revitalise interest in a car that has been criminally easy to ignore. Like many cars that are moving towards their dotage, the Colt only really makes sense if you can negotiate a very competitive deal. Fortunately this is far from tricky.
The Colt feels a good deal more assured on the road than that high rise styling might suggest. The suspension is fairly firm but on scabby city streets, only the worst that local government negligence can throw at it will upset its uncanny composure. The flipside of this is that the Colt offers a surprisingly generous dose of entertainment with decently weighted steering and better than adequate body control. The brakes are discs up front and drums at the back. Anti-lock and electronic brakeforce distribution are standard on all models, as is electrically assisted power steering. The 1.3-litre engine fitted to the Juro comes in a few flavours. All develop 94bhp but there are subtle variations. Buyers choose between three and five-door body styles first and then decide whether they want a manual or a clutchless automated manual (AMT) gearbox. Choose manual and there's another decision to make, selecting between the standard 1.3 and the low emission ClearTec model which is £500 more expensive. The 1.3-litre engine is reasonably quiet and eager to pile on the revs and the ClearTec's stop/start technology affords a certain serenity to the stress of city driving.
Design and Build
The Colt has some of the best passenger interior space in this market sector and there's little doubt that for a supermini at least, this car has been generously cut. Sitting on its front-wheel drive platform, the 5-door Colt is 3,870mm long, 1,550mm high and 1,695mm wide, creating a wide and tall profile, with a long 2,500mm wheelbase. Generous 1,460mm front and 1,445mm rear tracks maximise interior accommodation and offer class-leading cabin space. As well as having the best total legroom in the segment, the Colt's versatility comes from a novel rear-seating arrangement with 40/60 split rear seats which can be individually reclined, folded or removed altogether, creating 645 litres of load space. The backrests of the front passenger seat can also be folded forwarded to accommodate longer items, resulting in a small car with genuine utility. Even with a six-footer at the wheel, there's enough room in the back for all but the rangiest adults. A long wheelbase and compact suspension set up - MacPherson struts up front and a low volume torsion beam arrangement at the rear - help to maximise available space.
Market and Model
With prices starting at £10,499, the Colt Juro offers strong value for money. To put the figure into perspective, that will buy an entry-level Fiesta Studio with a less powerful engine and a whole host less kit. The Juro is based on the Colt CZ2 but Mitsubishi has thrown the options list at it, with black leather seats, 16-inch alloy wheels and a Garmin portable sat nav system. That would be enough to convince most people that this represented a good proposition, but the Juro also adds steering wheel audio controls, leather trim for the wheel and the gear shift knob on top of the usual CZ2 fitments of electric windows and front, side and curtain airbags. Other safety gear includes ISOFIX child seat anchorage points fitted as standard in the rear helping the car to a 4 star Euro NCAP safety rating. To specify an entry-level Fiesta or a Corsa to this sort of level would tack a couple of thousand pounds to the asking price.
Cost of Ownership
The Colt's light weight means that the 1.3-litre petrol engine turns in some reasonable fuel economy figures. It'll return 48.7mpg when teamed with a petrol engine and the ClearTec version teases that figure out to 56.5mpg. Go for an automated manual (AMT) gearbox and the fuel figure is 50.4mpg. Don't get too excited about the emissions figures. The manual car manages a fairly unspectacular 143g/km with the AMT gearbox helping it down to 138g/km, which is still more than that of a BMW 520d. The ClearTec version is the one to go for to sidestep the taxman, with emissions pegged at 119g/km. You ought to be able to twist your dealers arm into knocking some money off the list price of the Juro which will also help to defray depreciation. Insurance is rated at Group 16 across the range, against Group 5 or 6 for an equivalent Fiesta. This will be enough to delete it from the shortlists of young drivers.
