Ten Second Review
One of the smaller 4x4s on the market, Nissan's Juke is also one of the boldest. Aggressive looks that blend SUV and sports car design cues will help it stand out from rival small cars. Although 4x4 models are offered, the Juke is designed primarily to offer a sporty drive on the road with most cars making do with two driven wheels.
Nissan has shifted its emphasis away from what you might term the traditional market sectors in recent times. The Micra supermini is still going strong but above that, where other brands offer Focus-sized family hatchbacks and Mondeo-sized medium range saloons, Nissan relies on a cluster of 4x4s and small MPVs. The Juke is the marque's littlest 4x4 to date, a crossover model that sits below the Qashqai, X-Trail, Murano and Pathfinder in what is one of the most diverse collections of off-roader type models you'll find anywhere. We use the term off-roader in its broadest possible sense because the purpose of the Juke's rugged design is aesthetic rather than protective. Nissan would like us to see the car as a cross between 4x4 and sportscar, a macho alternative to a supermini for youthful urban motorists.
To look at the Juke, you'd think it had just come off a stage of the Paris Dakar Rally. The big wheels, extended ground clearance and body protection clearly hint at some all terrain ability but much of the effort that has gone into developing the car was actually focused on creating a sporty feel on the road. The MacPherson strut front suspension is tuned to optimise ride comfort and handling with a cradle-type front subframe included for extra lateral stiffness. Although the front-wheel-drive versions of the Juke have a basic torsen beam at the rear, the all-wheel-drive models get a special multi-link set-up, of a type not usually found on a car this compact. The 4x4 set-up itself is Nissan's advanced All-MODE 4x4-i torque-vectoring system. As well as distributing power between the front and rear axles, it can also split drive between the two rear wheels, reducing understeer and increasing general stability in corners. Whether front or rear-wheel-drive, the Juke has the ground clearance and chunky tyres to help it cope with the high kerbs and traffic calming measures that litter our urban centres. As for engines, well entry-level buyers have a cxhoice between a 117PS 1.6-litre petrol version with the same torque as the turbo or a 110PS 1.5-litre dCi diesel. Further up the range, where you get the choice of two or four-wheel drive, there's a 190PS 1.6 DiG-T petrol turbo unit, with its output teased up to 200PS in the more focused Nismo version.
Design and Build
There seems to be a huge amount going on with the Juke's design but against the odds, the various elements do mesh together in cohesive fashion. The look is highly adventurous with two sets of headlamps staring out from the front end, vast bodywork bulges over the wheels and the striking dogleg roofline that slopes away violently from the top of the windscreen. The interlocking circles cut into the under bumper, the rear door handles integrated into the C-pillars, while the boomerang-shaped rear lights add yet more points of interest. The Juke is 4,135mm long while the majority of today's superminis dip fractionally under the 4-meter barrier. It's also 1,765mm wide which, again, is larger than most supermini products but not by much. When you factor the Juke's wide track, flared wheelarches, beefy bumpers and long bonnet into its dimensions, the expectation must be for an actual cabin that's somewhat less roomy than the leading supermini rivals. The 251-litre boot includes an underfloor storage area and 60:40 split rear seats help to increase luggage capacity. The design inside shows the same ambition as that of the exterior. The centre console from which the gear lever protrudes is modelled on the top of a motorcycle's fuel tank and finished in high gloss paint. The instruments too resemble a bike's, with twin clocks shrouded by heavy cowls.
Market and Model
Most Juke models sell in the £13,500-£17,000 bracket, but you can pay up to £21,000 for one. There's a £1,350 premium to go from 117PS 1.6-litre petrol power to a 110PS 1.5-litre dCi diesel. The turbocharged DiG-T 1.6-litre petrol model meanwhile, will cost a premium of around £1,700 over a standard 1.6-litre petrol model of the same spec. 4WD comes only with this turbocharged engine and adds a hefty £2,500 premium on top of the price of the plushest 2WD version. Go for the slightly faster, more focused Nismo version of the two or four-wheel drive 1.6 DiG-T and you're looking at pricing starting from just under £20,000. Whichever engine you choose for your Juke - 117PS or 190PS 1.6-litre petrol or 110PS 1.5-litre diesel - you should find your car to be well equipped. An XTRONIC automatic gearbox is optional on the normally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol model and mandatory if you take up the 4WD option on the top turbo variant. Standard kit across the range runs to alloy wheels, air conditioning, a decent quality four-speaker MP3-compatible CD stereo, a Drive computer, a height-adjustable driver's seat and remote central locking. Bear in mind that base models don't come with the clever Nissan Dynamic Control System that's really an integral part of this car's offering.
Cost of Ownership
Nissan seems to have kept a decent cap on running costs thanks to an efficient set of Euro5-compatible engines. These deliver fuel economy which can see you achieve as much as 67.3mpg on the combined cycle in the 1.5-litre dCi diesel variant which offers an eco-friendly diesel particulate filter. The 117PS 1.6-litre petrol model most customers buy manages 47.1mpg, while in this 1.6 DiG-T turbo, 40.9mpg is promised, though if you specify it with 4WD, that figure falls to 37.2mpg. You can monitor your success in getting close to these figures via the bar graph history screen supplied by the Nissan Dynamic Control System. As for CO2 emissions, well the figures open up at 109g/km for the diesel. Next up is the normally aspirated petrol 1.6 which manages 139g/km, then it's 159g/km for the turbo petrol and 175g/km for the top 4x4 model. Again, very respectable figures and ones which compare well with workaday supermini hatches. Insurance is very competitive too, with an opening rating of 11E on the 1-50 groupings scale, rising to 12E for the ordinary petrol 1.6 and on up to group 20 for the flagship 4x4.
