Ten Second Review

The Skoda Fabia doesn't need too many gimmicks to keep people interested in what is one of the best superminis around, but here's a special edition version that's finished in black. Or white, if you prefer. Add in black alloy wheels, black exterior styling details, sunset privacy glass, heated front seats, Bluetooth, Skoda's PID information device and a DAB digital radio and at £15,490 doesn't seem a bad bit of business.

Background

The Skoda Fabia may have started life as a bit of a characterless cheapie, but in the intervening years, this Czech supermini has developed a bit of charisma. The VRS sports models positioned the Fabia as something other than a skinflint's city scoot, and subsequent success in rallying has also given the Skoda some genuine cool. It's not a cut-price Audi or a Volkswagen, it's a car that has grown into its own persona. It's now offered in a special edition model, the Black, with the sort of attitude that would once have had us chuckling behind our hands. Not now. The Fabia Black looks good and is priced keenly. It's part of a broad special edition product offensive from Skoda and the Fabia version might just be the best of the lot.

Driving Experience

If you're familiar with Fabias you'll know that its 1.2-litre petrol engines come in three guises. Quickish, slow and very slow. This Black model gets the quickish one, a 1.2-litre TSI unit good for 105PS, which will punt the little Fabia through 62mph in a non-dismal 10.1 seconds. It'll keep ongoing to a respectable 119mph as well, which means that motorway cruising isn't a constant reminder of the laws of preservation of momentum. The TSI engine uses a turbocharger to plump up low end torque, so you get 175Nm arriving at a mere 1,500rpm. Thus equipped it'll step off the line very cleanly in city traffic and front end traction isn't at all bad. The basic underpinnings, a MacPherson strut front suspension and torsion beam rear, haven't changed a great deal from the old Fabia but tuning to the damping means this car rides a good deal more smoothly. The steering wheel requires a bit of arm twirling lock-to-lock but it's a decently accurate helm and the gearchange is one of the best in its class.

Design and Build

The Fabia Black is, contrary to what you might have thought, also offered in white. While this clearly goes against the whole Black theme, there's something refreshingly perverse about owning a white Fabia Black. The Candy White paint finish isn't unappealing in the least but the car really comes into its own when painted in, well, a darker hue. The black alloy wheels, additional black exterior styling details and sunset privacy glass give the Fabia some swagger but do remember that you're packing just 105PS under the bonnet so don't get too carried away. Drop inside and there's more space than you'd normally expect from a budget supermini. Skoda claim more rear knee and headroom than any rival, helped by the fact that the Fabia is 22mm longer and 47mm taller than the model it replaced. Boot capacity stands at an impressive 300-litres with the seats in place or a massive 1,163-litres when they're folded.

Market and Model

Aside from the exterior extras, the Fabia Black also gets heated front seats, Bluetooth, Skoda's PID information device and a DAB digital radio. Priced from £15,490, it's not bad value when you pause to consider what else fifteen thousand will buy you in the supermini sector. Your money doesn't go that far if you want something other than a basic hatch. Demand something with a state of the art petrol engine and the asking price starts heading north. Other standard equipment includes air-conditioning and a three-spoke leather-trimmed steering wheel, an outside temperature gauge, a 4 speaker MP3-compatible CD stereo, 60/40 split fold rear seats, stability control, a height and reach adjustable steering column and an auto-dimming interior mirror.

Cost of Ownership

As you would expect, the 1.2-litre TSI engine plumbed under the pert bonnet of the Fabia Black turns in some excellent economy and emissions figures. It'll average 53.3mpg on the combined cycle, even managing 41.5mpg around town. Those are the official figures anyway. As a rough rule of thumb, taking the city economy and figuring that's what you'll see day in day out won't normally see you disappointed. Emissions are not at all bad with this peppy 1.2-litre lump emitting just 124g/km. Fabias have always held very firm when it comes to residual values, used buyers valuing the Volkswagen Group input and resolute build quality. Secondly, as this is part of the entry-level petrol engine family, insurance is very cheap with ratings expected to be Group 14E.
