Ten Second Review

To tell the truth, Mercedes didn't need to do too much to the old M-Class to keep it at the top of the tree, but this latest model is far more energy efficient, loaded with more technology and boasts better off-road credentials too. There are more angular styling details but a familiar shape will ensure that existing owners won't see their vehicle's residual values collapse. Let's check this car out in its most popular ML350 BlueTEC diesel guise.

Background

The Mercedes-Benz factory at Sindelfingen is like a slightly surreal city in its own right where everything is Mercedes-branded apart from the odd competitor vehicle that's being tested/dismantled by Mercedes engineers with knotted brows. It's vast. I came across at least three employees who were hopelessly lost on the way to watching an M-Class being shaken mercilessly on a hydraulic test rig. All very interesting but it was worth pausing to put this expensively developed US-built vehicle into a little perspective. The design studio was just the place for this. Here we had dashboards of the first M-Class (W163 model), launched in 1997. Functional would be a kind way of describing the design ethos. Fast forward to 2005 and the W164 generation M-Class debuted, offering much better materials quality and a design theme that emphasised the width of the car. Since then, a lot has happened in vehicle development and while the MK3 W166 generation M-Class facia I examined didn't look that different, the integration of technology means that, if anything, it's a bigger step forward in terms of user experience than ever. Enough conjecture: time to try the car - in this case the strongest selling ML350 BlueTEC diesel derivative.

Driving Experience

Somewhere in its narrative, the Mercedes M-Class allowed Porsche and BMW to comprehensively hijack the story thread that covered driving dynamics. Even Land Rover got in on the act, its Range Rover Sport donning spoilers and big alloys to mask the fact that it was a Discovery in a pretty frock. The M was cast in the role of plush but dull. Or at least non-AMG versions were. This time round the focus is on responsibility. Mercedes has also stressed its commitment to the M-Class' off-road ability and to that end it gains an ON&OFFROAD system which allows the driver to choose between Automatic, Winter, Trailer, Sport, Offroad 1 (light off-road) and Offroad2 (more arduous terrain). Irrespective of which underlying programme is set, the gear reduction, lock, downhill speed regulation or the self-levelling suspension of the AIRMATIC system can all be adjusted individually. the ON&OFFROAD package comprises an under-ride guard, a two-stage transfer case with reduction gear, a longitudinal differential lock and enhanced AIRMATIC functionality that allows a maximum ground clearance of 285 millimetres and a fording depth of 600 millimetres. UK buyers get to choose between two diesel models. First the economy-oriented ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC which delivers an output of 204bhp along with 500Nm of torque. It can accelerate from a standing start to 62 mph in 9.0 seconds, while its top speed is 130mph. The 258bhp ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC we tried is a heavier hitter with torque rated at 620Nm. This V6 diesel can accelerate to 62 mph in 7.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 139mph.

Design and Build

The M-Class draws inspiration in its basic proportioning from its predecessor while the detailing of the surfaces and exterior fitments is redolent of the GL and GLK-class models. Gone are the gentle curves, replaced with a more strident and powerful look. It's still an M-Class, just one that appears a little more gym-toned. Inside there's more shoulder room, with the cabin being 35mm wider in front and 24mm broader in the rear and the dashboard now features a far more prominent screen for the COMAND multimedia system with the air vents repositioned. Unlike many of its premium rivals, the M-Class does without a pair of vestigial seats in the back, preferring five full-sized seats though it has to be said that the centre berth in the rear is definitely the short straw being rather firm and not brilliantly contoured. If you need seven seats, look to the behemoth GL model instead. Four different wood veneer finishes are available for the dashboard or there's aluminium if you're not a lumber lover.

Market and Model

You'll need a budget of around £50,000 for the ML350 BlueTEC diesel derivative we tried, a variant that comes in at around £3,000 more than the entry-level ML250 BlueTEC diesel. There's no mainstream petrol model - just the £85,000 ML63 AMG petrol V8. All versions of this car come with smart AMG alloy wheels of at least 19-inch in size, a tyre pressure warning system, metallic paint, aluminium roof rails, auto headlamps and wipers, an 'Active Park Assist' system that measures spaces and steers you into them, an AMG bodykit, rear privacy glass, a powered tailgate, sports seats trimmed in artificial 'Artico' leather with power adjustment, the 7G-TRONIC plus 7-speed automatic gearbox, Bluetooth compatibility for your mobile 'phone, satellite navigation, a sports steering wheel, a high quality 'Audio 20' stereo system, automatic climate control and Hill Start Assist to stop you drifting backwards on uphill junctions. Beyond that, it's a question of deciding exactly what kind of car you want your M-Class to be, then selecting an appropriate options pack to suit. If it's mainly likely to function as a luxury saloon, then you'll want to find just under £2,000 for the AirMATIC suspension. If,on the other hand, you're the kind of driver who occasionally likes to push on a bit, then it might be worth finding just over £3,000 for the Active Curve System with its active anti-roll bars that compensate for body roll through the bends. This is optional only on the ML350 but standard of course on the AMG model. At the other extreme, you might be one of the minority of buyers likely to serious take your M-Class off road. If so, then it's essentially that you find another couple of thousand for the 'On and Off Road Package' which primes the car for the rough stuff with special off-road gear ratios and differential locks on both axles and in the centre.

Cost of Ownership

The running cost returns of this ML350 BlueTEC aren't quite as eye-catching as those of its four cylinder ML250 BlueTEC diesel stablemate. This model does, after all, still have a 3.0-litre V6 diesel under the bonnet. Even so, it's 39.2mpg and 189g/km showing is unbeaten in this segment. Overall, this is not only the most frugal and efficient 4x4 of its kind, it's also the cleanest and most eco-conscious -and not only because 95% of it can be recycled at the end of its life. This is where we come to the BlueTEC bit of the badgework. That refers to a standard system that injects an aqueous urea solution called 'AdBlue' into the exhaust gas stream, releasing ammonia. This in turn converts up to 80% of the harmful nitrogen oxides this car would otherwise put out into harmless nitrogen and water in the Selective Catalytic Reduction catalytic converter. The only downside is that you have to keep topping up the AdBlue tank under the luggage compartment floor at each scheduled service. What else? Well insurance - for the diesel models at least - is relatively affordable, pitched at group 38 for the ML250 and group 42 for this ML350. And, to make sure that maintenance is only entered into when absolutely required, there's an ASSYST service indicator on the dash. As for residuals, well you can expect these to be unbeaten in this class.
