Ten Second Review
The Audi A4 ultra takes an SE specification A4 and fits a tweaked 163bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine under the bonnet. The net result is 67.3mpg on the combined fuel economy cycle and 109g/km. By contrast, you'd need around £400 more to buy the entry level BMW 320d, a car that's not as well equipped, delivers less torque, is quite a bit thirstier and is rated two tax bands higher on carbon emissions.
It's not often that a company as progressive as Audi finds itself on the back foot. With its vast portfolio of models covering every niche and sub-niche you could imagine, the Ingolstadt brand seems very much a company that has its bases covered. You couldn't imagine them letting one of their really big volume sellers fall behind the competition could you? Yet in the case of the A4, that's exactly what's happened. This 'B8' generation of Audi's compact executive saloon and estate contender was launched back in 2008 and facelifted in 2012. Since then though, we've had an all-new BMW 3 Series and, more recently, an all-new Mercedes C-Class. Throw in a third generation Lexus IS in 2013 and Audi is clearly struggling to keep pace, a fact reflected in the fact that in the 2012 to 2014 period, the BMW 3 Series model's market share rose from 16.6 to 20.7%, mainly at the expense of the A4. Audi clearly needed to do something that wouldn't cost them the earth in the waning years of this A4's lifespan but which would offer real customer value. It's hit upon an idea that may have genuine legs; the super economical A4 ultra.
The venerable 2.0-litre TDI diesel found under the bonnet of this A4 ultra isn't going to come as a great surprise to many, as it's been the go-to powerplant for most British customers and it's still one of the better turbodiesels in its class, smooth and offering a strong torque response. It's been plumbed into the A4 in various power outputs, from 120 to 177PS, and it would be reasonable to assume that an eco version wouldn't go particularly big on brake horsepower. Audi clearly thinks otherwise and has generously endowed the A4 ultra with 163PS. If you know your Audi engines, then you'll know the brand already makes a 2.0 TDIe engine with that same output for the A5 Coupe and Cabriolet range. This isn't that powerplant. No, for this A4 ultra, we're talking of a completely new unit engineered for even leaner burning with super efficiency that has next to no impact on performance. It works with an efficient Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system that removes nitrogen oxides from the exhaust and ensures that the new models meet Euro 6 emission standards. Peak power arrives 1,200rpm earlier at 3,000rpm in the new ultra engine, while maximum torque increases from 380Nm to 400Nm and is available over a wider spread from 1,750rpm to 2,750rpm. Acceleration from rest to 62mph is measured at 8.3 seconds and the top speed is 140mph, so this won't feel like a penny-pincher's special. An A4 Avant estate version is also offered, which is only slightly slower, reaching 62mph in 8.6 seconds, and running on to a top speed of 134mph.
Design and Build
In the 2012 facelift, Audi had a little tinker with the exterior styling of this A4 - enough to ensure that even today, this car still looks a very sharp piece of penmanship. The company's current vogue for ever narrower headlamps continues here, the slit-like light pods these days featuring an LED running strip and optional xenon main bulbs. The rear lights were sculpted to mirror the look at the front and if you specify the 'Xenon plus' light pack, it comes with a homogeneous LED bar. If you owned an original version of this generation model, you'll also notice visual tweaks applied to the bumpers and the front grille, while angular air intakes and flat front fog lights give the front end a piercing stare. The interior is smartly finished, Audi's most recent changes leaving the key design themes alone and concentrating on improving the overall feel. Details count though. There's a fresh choice of steering wheels, including the rather lovely flat-bottomed wheel in the S4. And, more importantly, the MMI navigation system has had the number of buttons reduced from eight to four, with a shift function integrated into the volume control dial. While it looks cleaner, I wonder if it's any easier from a user perspective, especially when driving solo. Valcona leather has been replaced by Fine Nappa, while the colour palette for the interior has been revised. Buyers now get a choice of aluminium as well as wood dash inlays. The stunning Beaufort oak plywood inlay, first seen on the A6 is also offered.
Market and Model
Priced at just over £28,000, the A4 ultra saloon looks strong value for money against its key rivals, as indeed it ought to. By contrast, you'd need around £400 more to buy the entry level BMW 320d, a car that's not as well equipped, delivers less torque, is quite a bit thirstier and is rated two tax bands higher on carbon emissions. Suddenly, Audi's old stager proves that it's got something to offer. The ultra models get discreet badging at the back but in all other regards are visually identical to the more familiar SE-badged variants. Equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, an Audi Concert CD audio system incorporating DAB digital radio and linked to a 6.5-inch colour monitor, light and rain sensors, rear parking sensors and electronic climate control. Should you wish, you can also upgrade to 'SE Technik' specification. This adds Milano leather upholstery, along with additional features such as the hard disk-based 'MMI Navigation plus' infotainment and sat nav system. There's also an 'Audi Music Interface' (AMI) iPod connection and the Audi Parking System Plus set-up with front and rear sensors. That little lot doesn't seem a bad deal for another £1,000.
Cost of Ownership
All the money Audi spends on that nebulous thing called 'brand building' has real and tangible benefits to owners. It means that when you come to sell your A4 a few years down the road, there'll hopefully be a big queue of used buyers looking to pay top dollar for the privilege of taking it off your hands, driving down the overall cost of ownership figure to a number that's usually smaller than if you bought a similarly-priced car with a less sought-after badge. The A4 ultra also scores well in the sort of day-to-day costs that catch the eye. Its combined fuel consumption figure of 67.3mpg is something you'd probably be quite pleased with if delivered by a tiny citycar, while carbon emissions of just 109g/km are extremely competitive for such a well-built model capable of delivering 400Nm of torque. The ultra version of the A4 Avant estate doesn't do much worse, registering 64.2mpg and 114g/km.
