Ten Second Review

Despite the controversy surrounding its conception and birth, the X6 has been a hit for BMW, even the naysayers having to concede that, whatever you may think of the size and the style, it's a very impressive machine to drive. With the introduction of an M-badged diesel model - the triple-turboed straight-six being the most powerful oil-burner BMW has ever built - X6 drivers will be able to travel unfeasibly quickly whichever pump they choose to fill up from. Probably too quickly for anyone to notice the subtle facelift BMW has afforded the X6 range.

Background

Endowing a hefty, Tarmac-bound 4x4 with the chassis dynamics of a lower, lither performance saloon was nothing new (take a bow Porsche Cayenne), but teaming it with a supersized four-door coupe body that seats just four people most certainly was in 2008 when BMW launched the X6. It certainly got the media tongues wagging, some commentators branding it a crossover-too-far, others a blind alley. On the face of it, the X6 was a difficult car for BMW to justify. The company's explanation was that it was merely the next stage in the evolution of the Sports Utility Vehicle (or Sports Activity Vehicle as BMW preferred to call its trend-setting X5), delivering levels of dynamic excellence, driver involvement and design daring-do hitherto unavailable in a sector that included the Porsche Cayenne GTS, the just facelifted Mercedes ML63 and the Range Rover Sport. In other words, and rather like the X5 and Cayenne before it, just what the world never knew it wanted until it was told. BMW's said the X6 would be bought by people who wanted to enjoy both the inherent bulk and lofty driving position of a 4x4 and the sleek, swoopy, sporting character of a coupe. Futhermore, it would harvest market share from owners of other SUVs whose families had left home and wanted something that didn't shout 'familiy'. It did just that. And with a refreshed look and one more (very potent) diesel engine in its armoury, it's likely to prove just as unstoppable as it looks.

Driving Experience

BMW's model-naming department must be receiving quite a few queries of late, especially with regard to the application of the iconic 'M' badge. It seems there's now an 'M' for every occasion, from the hot-looking but trim-level only M Sport models to the full-on M GmbH road rockets. The recently introduced intermediate layer of diesel-engined M Performance models sits between the two. It includes what's already been dubbed the 'oil-burning M5', the M550d xDrive, and the identically-engined M50d that swells the X6 range. And what an engine it is. Essentially an upgraded version of BMW's 3.0-litre straight six TwinPower turbodiesel, but with three rather than two turbochargers, it delivers 376bhp and a knee-weakening 546lb ft of torque - enough to see it hurtle from rest to 62mph in just 5.3s. If you want to go faster in an X6 you'll need the truly monstrous 555bhp X6M - and, of course, you'll pay for the privilege in road tax and at the pumps. But as well as being part of the new M Performance tri-turbo diesel line-up, the facelifted X6 offers a further five engine choices: the aforementioned 555bhp X6M, V8 xDrive50i, six-pot xDrive35i and diesel-powered xDrive40d and xDrive30d, the latter available with BMW's nitrogen oxide-reducing BluePerformance Technology from Spring 2012. Whichever powerplant you go for, be in no doubt that the X6's chassis will serve it brilliantly. A system called Dynamic Performance Control (DPC) splits torque not only between the front and rear axles, but also between individual wheels. If the system senses the tyres are starting to slide, it instantaneously sends drive to the wheels with the most grip. And there's an almost ridiculous abundance of that. Added to which, Active Drive goes a long way to eliminated body roll by stiffening the anti-roll bars as the cornering forces build. The upshot is that the X6's size and bulk effectively evaporate when you're pressing on. Its agility, body control and stability at speed are exceptional: more scaled-up hot hatch than tied-down bulk container. On the road, the dynamic talent teams up with very fine levels of forward vision to make the X6 feel massively safe and confidence-inspiring.

Design and Build

The X6, one of the most extraordinary sights on the road, hasn't exactly dated. There aren't really any points of reference to measure such things by. Its sheer size and elevation are the first and last things you notice. That said, aspects of the design have been tidied. At the front, the foglights have been relocated to sit high up in the outer air inlets, BMW's signature chrome kidney grille is a little wider and more prominent and, if you want your plain vanilla X6 to look more like an X6M, the flagship's adaptive LED headlamps and blue aluminium brake callipers are offered as extra cost options. Cosmetic noodling? Not really. The altered apertures improve engine cooling and breathing, while the addition of little flaps beneath the front apron are said to enhance stability. At the rear, horizontally mounted twin LED light clusters incredibly make the X6 look even wider than before while additional paint finishes - including Marrakech Brown metallic, Orion Silver metallic and Midnight Blue metallic - and new bi-colour, double spoke 19-inch alloys for the xDrive 50i model, all feed into the X6's undeniable 'look at me' persona. Inside the standard leather interior is available in Vermilion Red for the first time, while the nappa leather option comes with the choice of either Black or Ebony White. While clearly based on the X5's, the cabin looks and feels classier and more elegant and has a remarkably inviting coupe-like ambience - right down to the snug (though, thankfully, not that snug) rear headroom. Legroom's generous, though, and the boot usefully huge. The seats front and back are terrifically comfortable and the elevated view from them the same as you'd expect from a regular SUV.

Market and Model

Prices sit within the £46,000 to £86,000 bracket for a range that kicks off with the xDrive30d (which commands a premium of £340 over the outgoing model) and concludes with the X6M (a rise of £3.5k). The M Performance tri-turbo diesel X6, the M50d, at just over £60k, looks the best bet if you want to combine thumping performance with an environmental conscience and nothing from Porsche, Mercedes or Range Rover can match this particular BMW's blend of potency and parsimony.

Cost of Ownership

EfficientDynamics technology isn't denied BMW's most in your face offering - arguably, it needs it the most. It comprises Brake Energy Recirculation, which recycles lost energy to the alternator, reducing alternator drag in normal driving conditions and improving fuel economy. Low rolling resistance tyres also feature, as do low friction transmission fluids and a high tech absorbent glass mat battery. Petrol powered X6s also get a high precision direct injection system for even more efficient combustion. Star of the show, for economy and emissions, is the xDrive 30d with a combined consumption of 38.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 195 g/km. But factor in sledgehammer performance and the M50d's 36.7mpg and 204 g/km of CO2 look comfortably the more impressive achievement. BMW has pioneered the age of have-your-cake-and-eat-it powertrain technology, and the X6 M50d is a prime example.
