Sunderland ended a run of three games without a win in the EFL Championship with victory away at West Bromwich Albion.

The Black Cats had drawn the previous two games after a defeat at home to Blackburn Rovers and could have gone behind had WBA been able to convert one of a handful of chances created in the opening half.

The game turned shortly before the break when the home side had Brandon Thomas-Asante sent off for two yellow cards in quick succession.

Sunderland took full advantage in stoppage time when a corner from the left was met on the half-volley by Pierre Ekwah and flew into the net to put the visitors in front.

The home side pushed hard for an equaliser in the second half whilst Ekwah also went close to a second, as Sunderland held on to secure a sixth away win of the campaign and complete the double over their opponents for the first time in more than 15 years.

Sunderland remain 13th in the table with three games left to play, the first of which comes next weekend at home to Millwall.
