Plymouth Bounce Back From Controversy With Home Win

Plymouth Argyle moved further clear of the drop zone in the EFL Championship after a dramatic end to a double-header week of league action for the Vertu Motors-backed side.

Buoyed by victory over Sunderland, the Pilgrims headed for Coventry City chasing a first win of the campaign away from Home Park – with 16 of the 19 points on the board having come at home.

The game would prove to be a closely-fought affair that was settled in controversial fashion with 15 minutes to go when Haji Wright struck to secure all three points for Coventry – but only after the ball had appeared to go out of play prior to being crossed for the winning goal.

With no use of the VAR system in the Championship, the goal was allowed to stand despite complaints from the away side, resulting in Plymouth slipping down to 20th in the table.

Eager to try and bounce back at Home Park against Stoke, the Pilgrims fell behind to a goal from Tyrese Campbell but drew level on the stroke of half time when Mustapha Bundu slotted in the equaliser.

The game seemed to be heading towards a draw but deep in stoppage time, Adam Randell celebrated his 100th appearance by prodding the ball home following a goalmouth scramble to secure all three points for Argyle.

As a result, Plymouth have climbed to 16th in the table ahead of a visit to league leaders Leicester City, whilst the FA Cup third round draw threw up an interesting tie with League 2 Sutton United next month.
