Exeter Chiefs Fight Back For First Away Win

The Exeter Chiefs remain third in the Gallagher Premiership table after a battling performance secured a first away victory of the season at Newcastle Falcons.

The Chiefs made the long trip to the North East bidding to try and carry the fine home form displayed at Sandy Park into an away victory – with four home wins but two away defeats from the opening six games of the campaign.

Yet again, the Chiefs put points on the board early when Immanuel Feyi-Waboso crossed the line to score within a minute of the start, although Henry Slade was unable to add the extras when he missed the conversion.

Newcastle fought back, and converted tries from Jamie Blamire and Matias Moroni meant that the home side hit the front – with all three tries coming in an action-packed opening ten minutes.

Slade then missed a penalty but at the third attempt, was able to kick some extras to leave the Chiefs 14-8 down at the half-way stage.

It was Slade who crossed for the second Chiefs try just after the hour mark to reduce the deficit but another missed kick meant Newcastle still led by a point.

However, within a matter of minutes the Chiefs managed to hit the front for a second time through Iosefa-Scott, with Slade’s conversion wrapping up a 20-14 victory – the first away league win for the Chiefs in over a year.

Exeter are away again next weekend with a trip to Bath, who sit one place – and one point – behind the Chiefs in the table.
