Rain Again Frustrates Yorkshire At Headingley

Yorkshire were once again left to rue the weather at Headingley after being held to draw by Glamorgan in the latest round of County Championship fixtures.

The Welsh side elected to bat first having won the toss but lost Eddie Byrom in the sixth over before Sam Northeast and Billy Root – brother of Yorkshire batsman Joe – put on 74 before Root fell having hit a half-century.

Play would then be delayed due to rain before a late finish under lights saw Yorkshire grab two more wickets to leave Glamorgan on 109-4.

Glamorgan would go on to reach 221 before being bowled out on day two as Dom Bess and Dan Moriarty took four wickets each before Adam Lyth was given out LBW early on in the Yorkshire reply.

Shan Masood joined Finlay Bean at the crease and shared a partnership of 68 before being caught, bringing Joe Root out to bat and kicking off an astonishing partnership as he and Bean went on the attack.

By the end of the day, Bean had reached his century and moved on to 140 not out, with Root eight away from a century of his own – putting Yorkshire 74 runs ahead with eight wickets still in hand.

The pair continued to hit out on the third morning as Root quickly moved onto three figures and the partnership would be worth 265 before Bean was eventually dismissed for a career-best 173.

Harry Brook then came in alongside Root in a partnership of 72 before Root departed for 156, although both Brook and Jonathan Tattersall hit half-centuries before Yorkshire declared with a lead of 298.

Glamorgan managed to survive to the end of the third day on 171-3, which put Yorkshire firmly in the driving seat going into the final day – with a lead of 127 runs and needing to pick up seven more wickets.

Northeast had other ideas however, with the Glamorgan captain batting through the day to score 142 not out and help guide his team to a draw, with Colin Ingram also reaching three figures.

Play would end early due to rain with Glamorgan leading by 74 and with three wickets still in hand, resulting in a draw and leaving Yorkshire with ten points for their efforts.
