Ten Second Review
If you need a car that blends into the background, look somewhere else. Nissan's Juke is distinctly extrovert but also practical and fun to drive as well. Pricing is so keen it reads like a misprint. It won't be for everyone but if you can live with the styling, it's a real contender, as buoyant sales demonstrate.
Nissan is a tough manufacturer to predict. Some of its cars are deeply conservative, some extreme, while others are thoughtfully innovative. Then there's the Juke, a small crossover vehicle that looks like no other car on the road. When it was first launched, we wondered who would buy it. The looks were a distinctly acquired taste, but it seems that the British public is pretty good at acquiring the taste for the Juke and sales have outstripped Nissan's most optimistic forecasts. Obviously, there's a lot to like about a car that's well built, fun to drive, aggressively priced and decently equipped and the addition of an n-tec model to the Juke range bumps up the equipment count still further.
The Juke's elevated stance but diminutive overall length doesn't promise a stellar driving experience but within a few yards, you'll realise that this is a fun car to hustle about. Yes, the inevitable upshot of making such a tall car handle so tautly are very stiff anti-roll bars, but Nissan's traction control system is adept enough that you're not forever bleeding away power as the car tries to accelerate out of a corner. The manual gearchange is light and rapid and the brakes are excellent, although the electrically-assisted steering always feels artificial, even in Sport mode which adds weight but not feel. It's a very accurate helm though, and confidence inspiring at typical road speeds. The most popular engine is the 110bhp 1.5-litre dCi diesel and it suits the Juke very well, offering the sort of elastic corner-to-corner torque that makes B-road jaunts effortless. The 117bhp 1.6-litre petrol offers superior low-speed refinement, but is a bit vocal at motorway speeds. The real dark horse is the 189bhp 1.6-litre DiG-T turbo powerplant. This gives the Juke a real turn of pace, making 60mph in just 7.7s on the way to 134mph. Prepare to laugh yourself silly at the looks of bemusement from some hot hatch drivers who find themselves mugged by this Nissan. At the top of the range sits a four-wheel drive version of the Juke 1.6 DiG-T fitted with an automatic gearbox.
Design and Build
Cosmetic changes for the Juke n-tec include an upgrade to 18-inch alloy wheels, the addition of gloss black trim on the B-pillars and door mirrors, and black bezels for the Juke's signature bonnet-mounted lights. It's interesting both inside and out. Although sacrifices have clearly been made on materials quality to offer such an eye catching price, a good deal of thought has clearly gone into making the cabin as distinctive as the exterior lines. The motorcycle-style clocks and centre storage bin that apes a bike petrol tanks are brilliantly conceived and Nissan's Dynamic Control interface will appeal to the most exigent button prodder. Space is reasonably good with decent access to the rear and the elevated driving position means it's simple to just swivel in and out of the driver's seat. What's more there's a ton of height adjustment so keen drivers can hunker right down in the car while the more timid can sit up high and use the bulbous headlight cowlings to help position the car.
Market and Model
The n-tec models open at just over £16,000 for which you'll get one with a 117PS 1.6-litre engine under the bonnet. Another £200 gets the n-tec+ version with built in Stop and Start. The real value in this line up is the DIG-T turbo model with 190PS at its elbow and a pricetag just under the £18,000 mark. The 110PS 1.5dCi diesel retails in the same kind of ballpark in n-tec guise. If you've been keeping an eye on Juke pricing, you'll have seen a slide upwards, with Nissan slyly testing to see what the market will bear. So while the Juke is no longer quite the bargain it used to be, you still get a lot of car for your money. Inside, the Juke n-tec gets a revised version of Nissan's Connect infotainment system. Controlled by a 5.8-inch touch screen, it incorporates sat-nav, reversing camera and Bluetooth functions. The sat-nav also includes Google Send-To-Car technology that allows owners to plan and send their route to the car via a laptop or smartphone before they leave the house. The touch screen also allows the driver to adjust the set up of the vehicle with the Nissan Dynamic Control System.
Cost of Ownership
Although prices have crept upwards, the Juke remains a buy that works out well on the balance sheet, even in this upspec n-tec guise. Nissan reckons this trim is set to become the biggest-selling Juke variant. Perhaps the biggest threat to its success might well come from a sister vehicle, the Renault Captur, a car that rides on the same chassis and looks set to mop up the money of buyers who still can't get with the Juke's styling. Fuel economy ranges from a combined figure of 37.2mpg for the all-wheel drive turbocharged automatic range-topper to 67.3 mpg for the entry-level dCi diesel. Emissions open at 124g/km for the diesel, then step up to 139g/km for the front-wheel drive 1.6-litre normally aspirated petrols - though you can reduce that to 136g/km if you specify a model with stop/start. Go for a faster petrol Juke and you're looking at 159g/km for the turbo petrol and 169g/km for the top 4x4 model.
