Ten Second Review
Citroen's avant garde DS5 is the most versatile, the most powerful and the cleverest of the French brand's desirable range of sporting DS models. Bringing together elements of everything modern family motorists seem to like - Crossover, coupe, family hatchback and sports estate - it's an intriguing package that really does seem to offer something just that little bit different if you were about to opt for just another Mondeo-sized medium range model or German compact executive saloon.
A 'Different Spirit'. The meaning of these two iconic letters is the meaning too of the brand they represent. Today, the DS range defines what a Citroen should be, just as it did back in 1955 when the first car to wear this legendary badge was launched to an adoring throng at the Paris Motor Show. It was futuristic, it was innovative and it stood apart from the mainstream. As does its modernday successor, this car, Citroen's DS5. And never was the brand in greater need of such a different spirit. Sales of conventional hatches and saloons, particularly larger models, are suffering across all the mainstream makers as SUVs, MPVs and most recently Qashqai-like Crossover models have flooded the market and offered family buyers a more interesting alternative to yet another Mondeo or Insignia. And that's exactly what this DS5 also is. Classy, cultured and beautifully appointed, it aims to bring a slice of French couture to the company carpark.
Already seen in Peugeot 3008 and 508, the DS5 was the first Citroen model to feature PSA's HYbrid4 technology. It's an appealing set-up that uses a 163bhp 2.0-litre HDi engine to drive the front wheels and a 37bhp electric motor to power the rear wheels. Smart, too, as it endows the DS5 with a different powertrain option for almost every day of the working week: front, rear or four-wheel drive (with CO2 emissions of 99g/km), plus the ability to run electric power alone with zero emissions. At the other end of the scale, there's a potential combined 197bhp and 369lb ft of torque on tap if you really want to get a move on. The more conventional alternative is a diesel engine and in the line-up, there are currently older and more modern options. The older units first - a 115bhp 1.6-litre e-HDi unit and a 160bhp 2.0-litre HDi engine. Better though, if funds permit, to choose the more modern and efficient BlueHDi units - a 1.6-litre 120bhp variant and a pokier 2.0-litre 180bhp powerplant. If diesel isn't you thing, a 200bhp turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine is also available. But whichever powertrain you choose, there's an over-arching, long-legged effortlessness to the manner in which the DS5 goes about its business which, in combination with the elevated and very comfortable driving position, makes it particularly relaxing company on a long trip. It handles with surefooted precision, too, and on roads that aren't too badly broken up, rides smoothly. The picture isn't quite so rosy on more ravaged surfaces, the MacPherson strut and torsion beam suspension becoming crashy and surprisingly noisy, especially on the larger 18- and 19-inch wheel options - though it's better than it used to be. The Hybrid4 version of the DS5 gets a more sophisticated multi-link rear axle and, in certain conditions, this helps a little but the extra weight imposed by the battery pack doesn't make its task any easier.
Design and Build
As the DS3 is based on C3 and the DS4 closely related to the C4, you might expect the DS5 to be C5-flavoured. Stylistically it is, but underneath there's a stretched version of the C4's platform, so it's a little longer and slightly narrower than a C5. Additionally, DS design cues like the scalloped air intakes in the front bumper help distinguish it from its humbler sibling. The driver-centric cabin puts some of the switchgear above the windscreen, aircraft style, but still leaves plenty for the impressive-looking centre console. A head-up display that projects configurable information onto the windscreen adds to the high-tech ambience. There's plenty of metal trim, which appears, among many places, on the rim of the flat-bottomed wheel and around the instrument bezels and on the unusual, but effective, 'shark's tooth' switches on the centre console. As for accommodation, the physical dimensions of the cabin differ little from the C5's which means plenty of room up front and a comfortable rear compartment with ample leg and headroom for a brace of six-footers which doesn't come at the expense of boot space which is large, practically shaped and accessed via a wide opening hatch.
Market and Model
Expect to pay between £22,000 and £34,000 for your DS5, depending on trim level and powertrain, with the Hybrid4 topping out the range and the 158bhp 2.0 diesel anticipated to be the most popular at just under £26,000. Citroen sees the DS5 not only as a Gallic alternative to 3 Series BMWs, Audi A4s, Lexus IS250s and the like but also, being the crossover that it is, appealing to people who might be considering an Audi Q5 (from around £28,000), an Infiniti EX (from around £37,000) or even an MPV-like very similarly priced Ford S-MAX. The most basic trim-level, DSign, comes equipped with keyless go, cruise control, electric windows all-round, air conditioning and Bluetooth. DStyle models get part leather seats, sat-nav and a reversing camera. The flagship DSport models get full leather massage seats and front parking sensors.
Cost of Ownership
All of the DS5's engines are competitively frugal and clean, even the powerful THP 200 petrol unit putting out a respectable 155g/km of CO2. The 120bhp BlueHDI diesel comes with integrated Stop/Start technology to automatically turn off the engine if you are stuck in traffic or at the lights. The resultant 102g/km of CO2 emissions also help with a lower road tax banding. Better still, of course, is the HYbrid4 drivetrain which emits just 91g/km of CO2, reaping even greater tax benefits. And there's 'FreeDrive', a customer support package aimed at taking all the worry and much of the cost out of ownership. It can be individually tailored to include everything from servicing and maintenance, MOT testing, roadside breakdown and recovery - even replacement of wear and tear items like tyres.
