Ten Second Review
The Toyota Avensis has long been a sensible choice but the Japanese are now attempting to inject a little sassiness into the mix. It's a more aggressive looking thing with a better quality interior and lower emissions. The latest diesel models are very good cars but will be a tough sell in a desperately fierce market.
This may sound a little odd but the Toyota Avensis is a really tough sell. Yes, it has established a reputation as a beautifully built and, in recent years, rather good-looking family car but it faces two big issues. The first is that the market for mainstream family cars has all but dried up and the second is that as the Avensis gets ever better it treads increasingly uncomfortably onto the toes of its cousin, the Lexus IS. Therefore it's perhaps understandable that Toyota hasn't given the latest Avensis a massive build up. Introduced at the Frankfurt Show, it's a revision of the third generation Avensis and was rather overshadowed by the Prius+ and the three-door Yaris. It's a vehicle that appeals to a core market of very clued-in buyers, so perhaps Toyota felt the big fanfare was neither necessary nor desirable. Diesel buyers who know their stuff will be in for a treat though.
Although much of the emphasis on this latest car is on the styling, quality and equipment, Toyota hasn't merely carried over all the oily bits. The biggest selling engine in the line up, the 124bhp 2.0-litre D-4D diesel, has been extensively revised not only to improve efficiency but also to offer a smoother, more linear rate of acceleration. A new turbocharger and revisions to the combustion chamber and glow plugs offer a smoother drive. The heavy hitter of the engine line up is the 2.2-litre D-4D diesel that cranks out 148bhp. This is also offered with a six-speed automatic transmission if the idea of swapping cogs yourself palls. Toyota has revisited the details of the Avensis' suspension setup. The big picture remains much the same with MacPherson struts up front and a double wishbone rear but spring rates and bushings have been adjusted to offer better compromise between ride quality and cornering agility.
Design and Build
Although the key dimensions of the Avensis saloon and tourer remain unchanged, the detailing is significantly smarter. The front end is a lot more assertive with the new Toyota family 'face' apparent. A key element in this is a change in the proportions of the upper and lower grilles, with the emphasis now on making the lower grille larger for a more dynamic look. The grille design is flanked by narrower headlamps which now incorporate daytime running lights. The lower bumper gets a protruding centre section that houses a large air intake. At the rear there is new rear bumper and combination lamp clusters with a chrome finisher for the number plate surround. Dark finishes for the 17 and 18-inch alloy wheels are particularly smart. The interior was already quite smart but the upholstery has now been upgraded, the colour palette tweaked a bit and the dashboard redesigned to improve ergonomics. The tactile elements have all been improved and the air vents are now finished in the same metallic colour as the centre console. The big improvement is the introduction of Toyota's Touch and Go Plus touch-screen satellite navigation system.
Market and Model
The Touch and Go Plus system is worth taking a closer look at. It wasn't very long ago that we were all picking our jaws up off the floors when this kind of system debuted on high-end Audis and now here it is in a family Toyota. What's the difference between this and the Tom-Tom you've got spit-suckered to your windscreen. Quite a lot actually. It's not only a fully-featured touch screen satellite navigation system that pulls in city landmarks and 3D models, it's also a music server that downloads album art and features intelligent 'Play More Like This' functions, all driven through an 11-speaker system. Voice recognition, text to speech, live traffic patterns, safety camera warnings, rear view camera, SMS send and receive and Google local search are all available. It's quite a remarkable piece of technology integration. Of course, this is the top line system. There's also a simpler Toyota Touch infotainment system and Touch and Go which includes navigation. There's also a dizzying amount of safety assistance systems offered, ranging from lane departure warning and lane keeping assist to pre-crash safety and smart adaptive lighting. We'll have to wait for the full UK trim structure to offer a definitive verdict on how the Avensis squares up to its rivals in terms of value for money, but such is the tight niche it operates in, don't expect it to deviate too far from its predecessor.
Cost of Ownership
It almost goes without saying that Toyota has worked to tweak the economy and emissions of the Avensis. It's standard procedure amongst all car manufacturers to ensure that their biggest selling models squeeze just under key emissions thresholds and the latest Avensis 2.0-litre D-4D engine nudges under the 120g/km tax barrier that's common across so many European nations. Compared to the previous 2.0-litre diesel engine, combined cycle fuel economy has improved by 15 per cent, from 53.3 to 61.4mpg and a 14 per cent reduction has been achieved in CO2 emissions, which fall from 139 to 119g/km. Overall the engine is 3kg lighter, quieter and delivers more linear torque. Cost of ownership figures are also commendably low, with the Avensis 2.0 D-4D not only beating comparable Passat and Accord models but even bettering the Mondeo, the Insignia and, most surprisingly of all, the Hyundai i40.
