Ten Second Review
The SEAT Ibiza I-TECH offers a cheap and cheerful special edition based on the Ibiza SE trim. You only get one engine on offer but the 1.2-litre TSI unit is good for 105PS and 105Nm of torque. Available in three and five door hatch as well as ST estate bodies, the I-TECH starts at an accessible £13,930.
Every once in a while, SEAT unleashes a product offensive of special editions. The cynical among you might feel that this is an effective way to shift slow-selling stock and if we were talking about Alteas or Exeos we might agree, but in this case the I-TECH editions include the massive-selling Mii, Alhambra and Ibiza models. We take a look at the latter here, largely because it's going to be the one that shifts most units out of British dealerships. You're probably used to this shape Ibiza by now. It's the facelifted version of the fourth generation car, launched in 2008. The revisions to the styling came in 2012 and the sharply creased exterior still appears crisp and fresh. The I-TECH version serves to remind us that there is intelligent life in this sector beyond Fiesta, Corsa, Clio and 208.
The I-TECH model has a lot of things going for it but a broad engine choice isn't one of them. In fact there's only one powerplant on offer. The good news is that it's the 1.2-litre TSI petrol unit, an engine that we've driven before in other Ibizas and which suits the personality of SEAT's supermini very well. All up it's good for 105PS which probably can best be described as adequate and you'll have to do some left arm and left leg work yourself, the I-TECH being supplied solely with a five-speed manual 'box. Still, that's no hardship as the transmission is crisp, direct and control weights are well-judged. Things don't look too bad against the clock, the I-TECH worrying 62mph from rest in 9.8 seconds and running on to a top speed of 118mph. The Ibiza also features ESP stability control and an XDS electronic differential lock. This uses the brakes to mimic the effect of a mechanical differential. In moments of fast cornering XDS gives out exactly the right amount of power, providing pressure on the inside wheel to prevent wheel spinning. The result is better traction and a reduction of any tendency to understeer. You'll experience a more agile, precise and calm driving performance with better traction out of bends.
Design and Build
The Ibiza I-TECH can be identified courtesy of its 16-inch 'Cartago' alloy wheels with titanium finish and B-pillar I-TECH badges. SEAT offer this car in either the standard five-door Ibiza body, the curvy three-door Ibiza SC and the ST five-door compact estate. The front end looks agreeably imposing, with sharp angles converging on the front number plate. The cabin gets a retrim with dark blue cloth and 'simil leather' upholstery with embossed I-TECH logo. Buyers also get a set of I-TECH floor mats, key cover and door sill plates. Materials quality has been improved in this latest version of the Ibiza. It's evident on the steering wheel, in the design of the Climatronic climate control system and in the higher tone paint surfaces. The focus, however, remains on functionality - the instrument binnacle with its improved display is one example, the significantly larger glove compartment, another. With a generous storage volume of 10.7-litres, this compartment offers space for a lot more than just the usual owners manual, your mobile charger and a bag of wine gums.
Market and Model
Prices open at £13,930 for the three-door Ibiza SC I-TECH, with £14,480 netting you the five-door version. If you need the extra space afforded by the ST, you'll need to stump up £15,180. These prices compare well with key rivals such as the Fiesta and Corsa. The three-door 100PS Fiesta 1.0-litre Ecoboost is down on torque and power compared to the SEAT, yet is around £200 more expensive. Should you want 100PS in a petrol-powered Vauxhall Corsa, you'll need to spend nigh-on £15,000 and get an SE with the 1.4litre normally-aspirated engine. That unexceptional engine develops 130Nm compared to the SEAT's 175Nm, so it's not hard to see where the value is. The I-TECH model is based on the Ibiza SE specification and therefore slots into the range between the Toca and the '30 Years' special edition. Equipment includes air-conditioning, a trip computer, electric heated mirrors, cruise control, electric windows, alloy wheels and front fog lights. Perhaps the most intriguing piece of kit available is the SEAT Portable Media System with touchscreen monitor. This combines the functions of a navigation system, on-board computer, audio system and hands-free device. While it's fully integrated into the Ibiza's on-board electronics, it's also removable for use on the go and to thwart light-fingered opportunists.
Cost of Ownership
Of course, the other reason for the introduction of special edition models is often to shift back stocks of an old and inefficient engine. It's a tactic that both Ford and Vauxhall have used to good effect down the years, but the 1.2-litre TSI still makes some decent numbers. In three-door form, you'll get 55.4mpg and 129g/km from it, which compares to 51.4mpg and 129g/km from the far less muscular engine in the pricier Corsa 1.4-litre. Residual values on the Ibiza have stood up very well too with this car retaining around 37.5 per cent of its new value after a three year/36,000 mile ownership period, which equates to a pence per mile cost of around 42.5ppm. By contrast the equivalent Corsa would run you 44.5ppm. Despite that, younger drivers might want to note that the SEAT falls into insurance group 12, whereas the Corsa is rated at Group 8.
