"This second generation XC60 features a more upmarket, cohesive look. It shares the same Scalable Product Architecture platform as we've seen in most of Volvo's recent models, including its larger XC90 sibling. This mid-sized premium SUV is 62mm longer, 12mm wider and 14mm lower than its predecessor and the 91mm-longer wheelbase means there's more legroom in the rear. At the wheel, you sit lower in the XC60 than you would in an XC90 and the muscular-looking door creases, extended 'Thor's Hammer' headlights and new grille give this model a sportier look. There's a longer bonnet than a rival Audi Q5 - and a longer roofline too. As you'd expect, there are plenty of family resemblances to the XC90, especially inside. The dashboard, seats and upholstery will all be familiar to recent Volvo buyers; the same 9.0-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital dial displays feature. It's not just under the bonnet that the new XC60 delivers healthy performance. The new CleanZone four-zone climate control system removes harmful pollutants and particles from outside the cabin to deliver."

Ten Second Review

The Volvo XC60 translates all of the quality and design values of the massively successful XC90 into a better looking, more compact package. With seating for five, the XC60 is at its prettiest in sportier R-DESIGN form, but it doesn't come cheaply. With silk metallic finishes inside and on contrasting exterior detailing, the R-DESIGN bears its premium label comfortably.


The Volvo XC60 couldn't have got its timing much worse. A premium 4x4 arriving into a market where these vehicles were becoming unfashionable and with a global economic meltdown to face, the Volvo negotiated the 'dollarcaust' with a surprising lack of drama. Sales held up where its rivals took a dip, helped in no small part by Volvo's rather less aggressive image, making its SUVs appear green and safe instead of thrusting and overblown. Near the top of the XC60 range sits the R-DESIGN trim level. If any of the XC60s could be fingered as being that bit extravagant this is the version you'd choose but, as you'll see, the Volvo's quiet competence and sheer likeability shines through even when its sporting its flashiest outfit.

Driving Experience

Aside from the shiny bits, the key change to the R-DESIGN version of the XC60 is that it rides on a stiffer chassis with stiffer damping. Volvo claims this has been achieved without impacting dramatically on ride comfort, but on a typical pot-holed B-road, the stiffer R-DESIGN suspension does transmit a few more shocks through the chassis, though it's by no means a harsh set up as the standard car is very much geared towards comfort. And the R-DESIGN is no surface-skimmer, Volvo recognising that a good deal of the R-DESIGN's utility would be lost if ride height was at all compromised. The more directly-geared steering also significantly sharpens the driving experience, the XC60 R-DESIGN feeling more nimble and wieldy on a twisty road with better steering feedback. A 163bhp 2.0-litre diesel that wears a D3 badge opens proceedings, with a 205bhp 2.4-litre D5 diesel above it. Choose a petrol engine and you get to choose between the 240bhp 2.0-litre T5 or the six-cylinder 302bhp 3.0-litre T6. The entry-level petrol and diesel engine drive the front wheels while the more powerful diesel and petrol powerplants offer full four-wheel drive.

Design and Build

Some cars just look right. One plane blends seamlessly into another without an awkward angle, jarring detail or gratuitous garnishing. The best designs make this result look easy; as if the car could never have looked anything but beautiful. There are any number of examples of cars that don't quite manage to bring this off. Cars like the Porsche Cayman, BMW 5 Series and the Ford Kuga look great from some angles but not so clever from others. Then there are cars like the Volvo XC60. It's a shape that sits easily on the eye whatever your vantage point, helped by the R-DESIGN model's colour-matched lower body mouldings and silk metallic detailing. And for that, you can thank a pair of Brits - Steve Mattin and Jonathan Disley from the Volvo design department. Built on Ford's EUCD midsize car platform, the XC60 shares its basic underpinnings with vehicles as diverse as the Mondeo, the Volvo XC70 and the Land Rover Freelander. Contrary to early reports, this isn't a rebodied Kuga, the wheelbase of the XC60 being significantly longer than the baby Ford. It is, after all, hard to class a 1,833kg car measuring 4,627mm in length and 1,891mm in width as a 'compact' 4x4. There's only room for five but at least the rear seats are higher than the front pair to give better visibility for children and the two outer seats in the back can be specified with two-stage booster cushions. The rear passenger compartment is roomy and a couple of six footers would be comfortable here over a long trip. The load opening at the back is also the widest amongst the XC60's direct competition, and the tailgate lifts up to reveal a 655-litre cargo capacity.

Market and Model

The XC60 gets a decent amount of equipment right across its various trim levels, and this R-DESIGN concentrates on boosting the aesthetic impact. To this end its door mirror housings, trim mouldings and decor trim are all in matte silk metal finish. It also gets a rear skid-plate, side scuff plates and twin chrome tailpipes. Eighteen inch five-spoke Cratus aluminium wheels are only available on the R-DESIGN model though a set of huge twenty-inch alloys can be specified. Inside the car, metal finish is the dominant theme, with aluminium inserts in the steering wheel, door mouldings and the centre stack. The sports pedals are made of brushed aluminium with rubber inserts. The steering wheel is trimmed with perforated leather and the sports seats are available with the choice of two colour combinations, either light beige with black accents or black with light beige accents. Buyers can choose either standard or Premium trim and all models come with climate control, cruise control and Volvo's City Safety crash prevention system, while the Premium gets leather, sat-nav and a digital radio.

Cost of Ownership

A combined cycle economy figure at close to 48mpg for the D3 diesel is an impressive showing for a vehicle of this type, and the 154g/km of CO2 emissions isn't anything to be ashamed of either. Opt for the D5 and you're looking at 42.8mpg and 174g/km. The petrol engines have cleaned up their acts in recent times too, though you'll still get clouted if you go for the top six-cylinder version with its mandatory Geartronic auto transmission, which returns 26.4mpg and 249g/km of carbon dioxide. Residual values, for the diesels at least, are buoyant (44 per cent says CAP after three years and 60,000 miles) and servicing costs will undercut equivalent Land Rover and BMW models. Insurance groups range between 28 and 35 but shop around as some insurers are offering useful discounts courtesy of the XC60's City Safety set-up.
