Ten Second Review

With a punchy turbocharged petrol engine, bags of front end grip and a decent ride, the latest Peugeot 208 1.6 THP might not count as a hot hatch, but as a warm one it's absolutely one of the best. Peugeot were once the masters of the fast hatchback. Is this a first step back towards supremacy?


I never feel as if I've really arrived in Portugal until I see a woman old enough to be my grandmother waddling up a street with no pavements whilst carrying no fewer than six shopping bags. Get a bit rural and they're everywhere, gently perspiring their way home from the not so local supermercado. This one must have thought this journey was her last. In my defence, she was on the outside of a really nicely surfaced long hairpin bend and I was at the wheel of a Peugeot 208 1.6 THP. This is a car that's tough to drive at modest speeds. It's got a great chassis and so a big, sweeper of a hairpin seemed like an invitation to extend it a little. We all get a bit dewy-eyed for the old 205 GTI, but I'm fairly confident that if I'd attempted a corner entry at that speed in a 205, it would have eaten the old lady tailgate first. As it stood, she got some warning from the squealing tyres and the maniacal laughter from two journalists inside. She didn't look very impressed, but national blame was avoided as the car was French registered. C'est la vie.

Driving Experience

It's hard to talk about the Peugeot 208 1.6 THP without talk gravitating to the steering. Yes, the steering wheel is set low and small, Peugeot reasoning that it's better to see the dials over the wheel (where the unimportant bases of the dials may be obscured) rather than peering through it where it's more likely that the important bits at the top of the clocks will potentially go unseen. Rather than its position, much discussion is about the feel, or lack thereof, and I'd be the first to admit that the electrically-assisted steering isn't exactly rich in detailed feedback. To counter that, it is accurate and quick, so once you've developed a level of trust, you feel a good deal more comfortable pushing the car a bit harder and learning what it's doing via sound, the seat of your pants and, yes, the messages from the wheel. And push it you will. Although this 156PS engine isn't as manic as the 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol unit that's sure to be a holiday hire favourite, it's got enough about it to serve up a decent slug of entertainment. The tiny turbocharger helps it to 60mph in 7.8 seconds on the way to a top speed of 134mph, and there's virtually no turbo lag at all. About the only frustration is wondering what a GTI might be like.

Design and Build

Drawing its influences from the SR1 show car that first appeared at the 2010 Geneva Show, the 208 represents a new design direction for Peugeot in this class. Although the basic silhouette could be accused of being a little more generic than its predecessors, the detailing is crisp, the surfacing neat and the overall shape is extremely cohesive. I particularly liked the rear lights with their claw-shaped cutouts and the swage lines on the door and bonnet that look almost sharp enough to deter you from drawing a finger across them. The interior is a major step ahead too, with higher quality finishes and a very neat infotainment system feature, while both three and five door models offer plenty more occupant space. Not only do rear seat occupants get 5cm more knee room, they do so in a car that is 7cm shorter and 1cm lower than the 207 it replaces. That increased passenger space doesn't come at the expense of luggage capacity either, with the 208 offering an additional 1.5 cubic litres in which to stow your gear. Both three and five-door body styles are offered with most powerplants in the 208 range but, for the time being at least, the 1.6 THP engine only comes in the three-door body.

Market and Model

If you were smarting about the lack of choice when it came to body styles, the news doesn't get a great deal better with trim levels. In short, there is no choice. The 208 1.6 THP is only offered in upscale Feline trim but, on the plus side of the ledger, the value proposition is pretty strong. For around £17,000, your car will come equipped with 17-inch Oxygen grey alloy wheels, electric, heated and folding door mirrors, an SR1 radiator grille in satin Stealth Grey paint with a dark chrome bead, a sports rear spoiler and chrome exhaust tailpipe as well as colour coded mirrors. Directional front fog lights and rear parking sensors are also fitted. Drop inside and you'll find sports seats with Eclipse Premium Trim, a panoramic glass roof with ambient lighting, a multifunction 7-inch colour touch screen with USB / 3.5mm jack and Bluetooth with steering wheel mounted controls. ESP stability control is fitted as standard as are eight airbags and cruise control.

Cost of Ownership

The 208 1.6 THP is quick enough to get your jollies with but the suspicion that its turbocharged engine might be a bit fond of a drop of 95RON comes to naught. And how. Driven at speeds that won't horrify the local geriatrics, this 208 will average 48.7mpg. Even around town, that figure only drops to 35.8mpg. The 135g/km carbon dioxide figure isn't quite so impressive but it's still distinctly respectable. Even when being caned to within an inch of its life on some of Portugal's best coast roads, the fuel consumption didn't dip below 25mpg, which is impressive, especially as I've seen some quite surprising vehicles dip into single figures when really being wrung out. Residual values also look very encouraging when stacked against those of the 207 and also the 208's current crop of rivals. There's a significant amount of residual goodwill towards Peugeot that has endured through a period when the company was making some decidedly lacklustre tackle. Now that they're back on a firmly upward trajectory, it's hard to see an economical, well built and entertaining used hatchback having trouble finding used buyers.
