"A fantastic opportunity to buy a Honda Accord 2.2 i-DTEC EX. This is a one owner car with the last two services having been carried out by Honda dealers. This car is finished in Graphite grey metallic with the added luxury of having ivory leather trim. This car is top of the range in every way. Inside the car you get premium audio with USB connectivity and a 6 stacking CD player, both front seats are heated with the drivers seats also having memory, even the centre armrest/storage has a vent to allow in cool air. Driver and passenger can set independent temperatures thanks to the dual zone climate control and for those who like fresh air there is the an opening sunroof. At the drivers finger tips on the steering wheel are controls for the stereo, blue tooth hands-free and voice control for up to 200 commands from altering the temperature to changing the radio station. Sat neatly in the dashboard you also get touch screen sat nav, this to can be worked using the voice recognition. As you may expect with a large luxury car this car also has front and rear parking sensors as well as a rear parking camera."

Ten Second Review

The Honda Accord is a supremely engineered car that's geared for comfort and which has recently cleaned up its act when it comes to emissions. Value for money? That's up to you to decide but if discounts are available, it will make a rewarding choice.

In continuous production for over 35 years, you'd expect that by now the Accord would have been honed to the point of virtual perfection by Honda. Drive one and you have to concede it's a strong contender. The company's almost obsessive attention to detail and fascination with intricate engineering means the Accord is a car like no other. If there's one thing that Honda can stand accused of, however, it's occasionally focusing so intently on the detail that it loses sight of the bigger picture. The last generation Accord is a case in point. I'm not sure how much resource was poured into developing the Lane Keeping Assist System but I'd suggest that money might have been better spent reducing the car's uncompetitive carbon dioxide emissions. Better late than never, the penny has dropped and the latest Accord aims to reduce its carbon footprint while at the same time offering more equipment and improving the driving experience.

Driving Experience

Honda has rather underplayed the changes it has made to the way the Accord drives, rightly concentrating instead on its efficiency benefits. Nevertheless, the latest Accord is fitted with higher quality soundproofing materials promise to increase refinement and the damping system has been completely revised to offer better ride comfort. Otherwise it's much as you were. The focus of the line up remains the i-DTEC diesel engine. Generating 149bhp at 4,000rpm it shouldn't be confused with the old 138bhp i-CTDi engine with which it shares its 2.2-litre capacity. It's a good deal silkier and also beats the old lump in terms of emissions and fuel economy. And with a peak torque figure of 350Nm, it's respectably punchy. Choose the Type-S trim and you get a 180bhp version of the diesel that'll get to 60mph in 8.5 seconds. Otherwise there are two petrol engines, starting with the 155bhp 2.0-litre i-VTEC with its revised valve lift and timing and better gas flow. Honda is also persevering with the 198bhp 2.4-litre i-VTEC petrol unit, an engine that's a bit of a peach but which is hard to justify on the basis of costs. All engines are mated to six-speed manual gearboxes, while all models bar the sportier Type-S trims get the option of an automatic box.

Design and Build

Both the Saloon and Tourer models have seen cosmetic attention paid to the usual facelift targets, the grille, lights and bumpers. The headlights have been given a cleaner appearance with the previously amber indicators now in a clear finish. On top grade cars the lights are now bi-xenon and feature Active Cornering Lights to improve night time visibility. The grille has also been subtly remodelled and the tail lights now have a light red finish for the reversing light and indicators to match the fog light, giving a better cohesion to the styling. The cabin has come in for a light makeover too, with dark silver interior panels and bright silver door handles and handbrake, while ES grades now benefit from improved seat materials and door linings. The footwells of the ES and EX are illuminated blue (red on ES-GT and Type S models) if the headlights are switched on.

Market and Model

Consider this. A Honda Accord 2.2 i-DTEC in Type S trim retails for £29,060. That's quite some price. Honda had made a concerted effort to pitch the Accord as a premium model in the UK but so far buyers aren't taking the bait. To put that figure in context, a diesel Jaguar XF can be had for £30,950.Perhaps Honda's aspirations are running a little ahead of customer perception. The Accord features technology that owners could really only expect to find in premium cars though. This Honda is available with refinements such as High Beam Support system, which is fitted on vehicles with the bi-xenon headlights. This system is controlled by a camera fitted to the windscreen in the area of the driver rear view mirror. The camera detects oncoming headlights or the tail lights of a vehicle in front and automatically dips the headlights onto their normal setting if they are on high-beam. Otherwise, all models get Bluetooth, 17-inch alloy wheels, CD player with MP3/iPod connectivity, cruise control, dual-zone climate control air conditioning, Vehicle Stability Assist, Brake Assist and side airbags. Top of the range EX and Type S models see all of the above plus DVD Satellite Navigation, leather upholstery, electric and heated front seats with two-stage memory function, an upgraded stereo with in-dash six-CD capacity and ten speakers. Pricing starts at £21,695 for the entry level petrol model or £23,795 if you'd like a diesel.

Cost of Ownership

Honda has looked to belatedly improve the Accord's carbon dioxide emissions and the latest model sees the 149bhp diesel saloon (with manual transmission) move from 147 to 138g/km and the equivalent 2.0-litre petrol version dip from 168 to 159g/km. These figures, while good, aren't anywhere approaching class leading but do represent a significant step in the right direction and may well put the Accord back onto the radars of company car drivers. Fuel economy has been improved too with the diesel saloon managing 53.3mpg in manual form or 46.3mpg with an automatic gearbox. Residual figures will be interesting. The current Accord hasn't fared too well on paper, although dealer discounting means that the car is nowhere near as costly to run in real world conditions as some magazine pence per mile indicators might suggest.
